Cam Ranh Field Report

During the last two days I've been hunting for a location to build our 52nd school in Khanh Hoa province. This is a new province for VCF as we haven't built a school here yet.

The village I found is a subsistence ethnic minority area where they grow cassava, corn, bananas and raise goats and chickens. The Rac Lay tribe is the name of the ethnic minority group living here.

Suoe Rua village, Cam Thinh Tay district, Cam Ranh city is the name of the location. The education department will send me the statistics such as number of families, etc.

They need an additional 4 classrooms, which can be built behind the two existing buildings. We will get the estimated costs for building in this area but we have been warned that there's no water in the area. The water will need to be trucked in along with all the other building materials from Cam Ranh city that's about 25km away.

The education department has suggested we build two classrooms and renovate the existing single classroom building to start with as this will make it easy to get all the permits and other paperwork.

When I get all the required information and pricing I'll do a feasibility study.

I'm quite pleased to have found a school that meets VCF's requirements such as being in a poor remote area, in Cam Ranh and in need of assistance to build additional classrooms.

After a tour of the school we held a meeting with the director of the education department, among others, in the shade of a tree across the street from the school. The center of the village can be seen in the background.


The primary school has two buildings with the older building in the foreground. It has only one classroom while the other building has two classrooms. The WCs in the back are clean and well kept.


The houses around the village are mostly made of wood and the families suffer greatly during the typhoons and need to seek shelter wherever they can find it.


These second graders were fairly shy as they had never met a foreigner before. This classroom is in the larger of the two buildings.
